Roatan isn’t as well known as some of the other Caribbean Islands, but it has so much to offer and not just deep sea fishing. It has scenic beaches with warm, blue waters, and perfectly white sand. It has tropical forests that are home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. Simply put, it’s a genuine tropical paradise with so much to do and experience.
On the Water – Deep Sea Fishing, Scuba Diving & Snorkeling
The whole island is surrounded by reef, and offers some of the most beautiful diving spots in the world. It is actually the second largest reef in the world! The dive sites have canyons, and drop offs, but the reefs begin at 20 to 40 feet, so even beginner divers can experience the calming effect of being under the water with the Caribbean’s largest variety of coral. If you haven’t dived before, then there are plenty of experienced instructors who can teach you. Some instructors can teach you how to dive in your hotel swimming pool, or on the beach on a one on one basis with a native English speaker.
If diving isn’t for you, then many of the same dive spots can be used for snorkeling. Snorkeling in Roatan gives you an underwater adventure with colorful fish, turtles, seahorses, and healthy, gorgeous coral. We have some favourite Roatan snorkeling tour spots that we love to take our guests.
There are also opportunities on the island for those that want to get even closer to the marine life, and you could go and swim with trained dolphins at Anthony Key Resort. These dolphins are very intelligent, friendly and highly trained. They’ll perform tricks, and let you touch them. It’s an amazing experience!
We may be biased, but we think nothing beats Roatan deep sea fishing as an excursion on your vacation. The fishing is incredible and plentiful! Captain Artley can take you to the islands hot spots for marlin, tuna, barracuda, mahi mahi and wahoo.
On Land – The Iguana Farm, Monkeys and Scenery!
Roatan doesn’t just offer water based activities. It has plenty of land based activities too! There’s adventure to be found in the zip lines, canopy tours, and mangrove tours. We can customize a tour to take you to visit some of the islands awesome attractions such as the Iguana farm, or see the monkeys and sloths at Daniel Johnson’s animal sanctuary.
Where to stay on Roatan?
If quiet relaxation, and water activities is what you’re looking for, then you should find accommodation on the east side of Roatan. It’s not as busy as the west side, but it still has some of the most wonderful accommodation available and absolutely amazing scenery away from the busy tourist areas. Diamond Vitality Resort is an amazing yoga and wellness retreat near Paya Bay in the east end.
The west side has equally wonderful accommodations, with West Bay having the larger resorts but it also has the West End. The West End is full of coffee shops serving organic Honduran coffee, bars, restaurants and nightlife. If you prefer to be right in the thick of a social hub, then this is the spot for you. There are plenty of great, smaller hotels and bed and breakfasts that are incredibly reasonable for weekly rentals such as Casa del Sol.
Once you’ve been to the paradise of Roatan, you won’t be able to wait to go back! Seriously…take a look at how many expats there are in West End that decided to never go home! Roatan has done a fantastic job of maintaining its island charm, while still establishing itself as a must visit destination. The locals are warm, welcoming and very proud of their island and the astonishing beauty it has to offer.
