The History
The Garifuna people are part of the Islands multi-ethnic population and have a long history of being settled in Punta Gorda. Their ancestry is traced back to a shipwreck of the Lesser Antilles Islands that were carrying slaves from
Africa in the early 18th century. They settled on the island of Saint Vincent, however when the British took control in 1763, they exiled 5,000 Garifuna people to the island of Roatan. Many did not survive the voyage, however, the ones that did settled in Punta Gorda. Their unique cultural traditions and heritage are still very much present and many days you can visit music and drumming circles in the village center.
