roatan snorkeling excursions

Not a scuba diver but still want to discover the fascinating underwater world of the Caribbean? Snorkeling will give you a perfect view of our stunning, colorful ocean.

Snorkelers use a clear plastic mask and a short tube to breathe while floating down on the surface of the water. This way they can observe the colorful and fascinating world of coral and marine life without having to come up for air every minute. It is imperative to learn how to use your snorkeling equipment. Here is a step by step guide.

How to UseĀ  Your Mask

Once you put on your snorkeling mask on, tug the straps to adjust until it fits comfortably around your eyes and nose. But it should not be too tight to avoid leaking. Position the strap a bit higher on the back of your head if you are getting water into the mask. This will pull the mask a bit tighter to the lower portion of the face, so you can comfortably enjoy your Roatan snorkeling excursion. Make sure no hair is trapped that may break the seal.

How to Use Your Snorkel

Traditionally the snorkel is placed on the left side of the mask. Lay flat on the water on your stomach and place your face in the water at about a 45-degree angle. Bite gently down on the mouthpiece of your snorkel and allow your lips to seal around it to hold the snorkel in place when breathing. Take slow, regular breaths with your mouth through the snorkel. Once you get into a rhythm, relax and enjoy your Roatan snorkeling excursion and the impressive underwater scenery.

How to Use Your Fins

Fins help propel you while in the water. Once you have your fins on avoid using your hands as this will create more resistance and slow you down. Instead, place your hands behind you in the small of your back or straight out in front of you. To achieve the correct positioning of the fins your feet should be in a similar position to when standing on tiptoe when out of the water. Use both of your legs to make straight-legged kicks as opposed to kicking from the knees down.
